The state of my health is now such that I find it impossible to reside longer in these climates, and I have by this mail forwarded through His Excellency The Governor of this Colony a Memorial to The Right Honorable the Earl Grey praying for a Civil pension in November 1851, or a Commuted allowance in lieu thereof with the intention of settling as a Colonist in New Zealand and providing there for my Family of 4 sons - of whom I have not succeeded in settling one yet in Life - My application is that in the event of Lord Grey being pleased to accede to my solicitation (of which your Lordship will doubtless be duly informed, as I am forwarding this application through the Colonial office) that I be permitted to sell my Majority for the purpose of becoming a settler in New Zealand, and obtaining a grant of 600 acres in conformity to the Crown Regulations as to grants of Lands in the Colonies, and if possible retaining my name on the Army List as before stated...

I have therefore to entreat the favour of this application being submitted to His Grace the Duke of Wellington, and as the proposal is only based on my resignation of my office, the difficulties hitherto existing will I trust be removed, and by an additional act of Civil consideration to myself, I shall be enabled to make arrangements here with my Creditors, and possibly prolong my life by retiring to the more congenial Climate of New Zealand.

My List of Services are well known at the Horse Guards, and I will not trouble Your Lordship...
